Whoville - Paper Craft

Description: This lesson was the one I taught with my partenr Hailey. We created a lesson that was insplired by Whoville from Dr. Seuss. We also tied in an artist that was known for his patterned work. Students created a crazy Whoville town with different folds and designs. We taught students four different folds (roll, plette, loop, and curl). Students were requried to have at least two of the four folds and four patterns in their final project. Once all students were done with their project we placed them all on the white board to show the big down of Whoville. This showed students what it would look like if it was displayed in the hallways of the school.

Extension Activity: An extention activity I would do would be to have students to do this lesson during Christmas. Students would use green and red pices of paper to create a Chirsmtas themed Whoville. The teacher would also read How the Grinch Stole Christmas or watch the movie.

Print Making

Description: This lesson was about creating different prints using different colors, textures, and materials. It was fun getting to experiment with stencils, stamps, and vegtables to create designs within my prints. I chose to use gold, sage green, emerald green, and blue for my paint colors. I thought all these colors complimented each other very well and ended up creating three great prints. After I was done creating the prints I cut them out and put them onto a pices of paper to create a "gallery." Then we were also required to add two to three sentences expaling what we used and why.

Extension Activity: For an extension acitivity I would have students add things that show their personalilties and can tell others about them. For example, if they are into sports they can add in their jersey number or if they are into math they can add in different math symbols. This can help students get to know eachother or be used as a intduction activity at the beginning of the school year.

Watercolor Galaxy

Description: For this lesson we started off with trying six different watercolor techniques that we could later use in our final project. My six techniques are on the left side of the picutre. This was fun to get to experiment and test out different techniques that we could use. Once we were done with the test page we started on our final project. I chose to do a blue and purple sky/background with black mountians at the bottom. I also added stars in the sky. I ended up using five of the six techniques to give it a good variety.

Extension Activity: If I were to do an extention activity I would have students create a landscape based of a place they have traveled or seen. This would allow students to express what they have experinced in their life and also create something that may be meaningful to them.

Forced Perspective

Description:
This lesson started out with drawing a little dot in the center of the paper. Then drawing four squares or rectangles on each side of the dot. Once all eight squares or rectangles were drawn we used rules to connect the corneres of the shapes to the dot. This gives the illustion of it coming off the page. Then we added different designs onto the top parts of the shapes. After that we used oil pastells for the color. We needed to use two colors that were similar to eachother to give it the illusion that the color is fading.

Extension Activity: If I were do add onto this activity I would have students add other shapes like triangles, pentagons, circles, etc. This could be made into a fun and detialed math lesson. The teacher could dispaly the porjects in the hallway or in the classroom to show off their math and art skills.

Hidden Safari

Description: This project had a few different parts to it. The first part talked about safaris and the animals you would see on one. We said that you would see elephants, giraffes, lions, rhinos, and many more. Then we talked about warm and cool colors. Warm colors are colors that remind you of something hot. Warm colors are red, orange, and yellow. Cool colors are colors that remind you of something cold. Cool colors are green, blue, and purple. To create our project, we started out making our red glasses. These glasses help us cancel out any warm colors when we look at our final project. Then we practiced drawing images upside down. Drawing upside down helps you focus on the spaces rather than the object you are trying to draw. This is a great tool for students who are learning how to draw. Then we each picked a safari animal to draw for our project. I chose an elephant. I drew my elephant upside down with a blue colored pencil. After my elephant was complete, I took my warm colored crayons and made patterns to cover up my elephant. In the first picture, you can see my patterns. In the second picture, you can see my elephant because of the red glasses. The red glasses cancel out any warm colors that are covering my elephant. Then I put my drawing onto some colored paper for a background and added my hints.

Extension Activity: An extension activity I could do with this would be to have students do research on South Dakota animals, such as pheasants, deer, mountain lions, bears, etc. After students find a South Dakota animal, they will do this activity. Once they have done research and drawn their animal, students will write a report. This report will allow students to give additional information about the animal before they get to see the drawing.

Vincent Van Gogh Inspired Landscape

Description: This project started off with talking about Vincent Van Gogh and his project Starry Night. After learning about Vincent Van Gogh and his works of art, we moved on to creating a project inspired by Starry Night. This project was started off by using tissue paper and gel medium to create the background. I chose to use the colors red, pink, orange, and yellow to create the illusion of a desert sunset. After the background was complete, I added white oil pastel swirls and lines. These different lines create the look of movement from the wind. Finally, I moved onto the landscape. Since this is a desert, I wanted mountains and cactuses. I found inspiration online and created my landscape. I also added the sun in the sky. After cutting out my landscape, I used oil pastels to create texture on the mountains and cactuses.

Extension Activity: An extension activity I could do with this would be to have students do research on South Dakota landscapes. After doing research, students would make a landscape project inspired by one of the many beautiful landscapes in South Dakota. This can also be tied in with social studies.

Dot Day

Description: This project was introduced by a book reading called The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This book was a great what to introucde simple art to young students. This also adds in English Language Arts to this art lesson. My dot was created with a coffee filter and different types of mediums such as crayons, water color paint, paint crayons, and oil pastells. I put the word "teach" in the center using a white crayon to simbolise my major. I then used different shades of green to create a disign all around the coffee filter. After I completed my design I used green water colors and painted the whole coffee fliter. Once it was dry I was left with a very green art projecct!

Extension Activity: If I were to do another activity with this it would be to have students go around the room with a white crayon and write one nice thing on four classmates coffee filter. This allows students to think about others and share the good things about their classmates. The cool thing about this activity is that no one will know what is written on their project until it is dry!

Elements & Principles

Description: For my project, my partner and I chose to do a cavanger hunt. We put all our pictures onto slides with corresponding definitions. Each slide is put up around the room, and students are told to walk around and finish the worksheet. Students walked around the room and had to match the words with the pictures and definitions. Once all students were finished, they sat back in their desks, and we went over the answers with the class.

Photos:

Color - what you see when light reflects off something - it helps use desrbie objects and make the world bright and interesting

Value - how light or dark a color is - shows depth, shadow, and light

Movement - how an artist shows action or guides your eyes through a picture - it makes the artwork feel lively

Balance - when the parts of a picture are arranged so nothing feels too heavy or too empty - it makes the artwork look steady and even

Space - the area around, between, or inside things in a picture - shows depth and makes artwork look bigger or smaller

Extension Activity: If I were to do another activity with these pictures, I would make it into a matching game. I would print out the words and defnitions and picutres. Students would play a normal matching game where they have all the cards upside down. Students take turn one-by-one flipping the cards. If they get a match, they get to keep it and go again.

Footprint Introduction

Description: This project was created to introduce myself to my class. I created this work by using three or more art media. I used pictures, paper, crayons, markers, and stickers. From left to right - I drew a picture of my family (dad, mom, sister, brother), a picture of me and my fiance (Cade), a football sticker that represents my love for the Minnesota Vikings, the Wildcat logo represents my high school (Northwestern High School), along with a volleyball that represents my love for coaching at Northwestern, the NSU Wolf is for my college, along with the drawing that illustrates that I am an education major, and the last two stickers represent my love for traveling.

Extension Activity: If I were to create another activity similar to this, it would be to have students create a name plate to put on their lockers. I feel that this activity would get students to express their creativity and their hobbies and interests. This also gives the classroom a unique feel since it will be created by the students and show off the things they love.
